I know allot of people are interested in saving a few bucks on this service (drain and fill), but are apprehensive about performing it themselves. This guide can too exist useful for those who have mistakenly drained the AT pan instead of the base pan when performing an oil change. I've gotten allot of PM's over the past number of weeks past individuals who mistakenly drained the AT looking for help to repair their misfortune. The following volition serve as an official "How To" and hopefully aid some individuals who need such information.

DIY'er beware however, every bit I accept no responsibility if you lot should screw this up, costing you lot a tow to the dealer (or worse). I strongly recommend anyone who tries this should consult the Toyota Factory Service Transmission for further clarification, and go competent in getting the truck to enter the temp check mode before attempting any drain/fill up, merely honestly it is but a footling more involved than a typical oil alter for anyone with moderate mechanical power.

The drain and fill up process on the Toyota 5 speed AT (mated to the 4.0L V6) is different than that of traditional transmissions. Since this manual has no dipstick to cheque fluid level, the correct level must be confirmed past an overflow plug on the bottom of the pan. The fluid temperature MUST BE between 46°C (115°F) and 56°C (130°F) to accurately bank check the fluid level. Toyota techs utilize the Toyota computerized scan tool to accurately verify the ATF temperature. Since almost of us have no access to the Toyota tool, we must utilize method "B" and use the trucks onboard diagnostic arrangement (OBD).

MATERIALS REQUIRED:

24mm socket or wrench
14mm socket or wrench
5mm hex socket or allen key
4-5 quarts of Toyota ATF WS (WS certification is the only compatible fluid).
Modest piece of copper wire (used to bound the OBD connector)
New Trounce washers from dealer (not necessary but not a bad thought)
Bottle pump and hose or funnel and hose (both available at Wal Mart for few $$$)
Drain Pan

Procedure:

Remove the fill up plug (24mm) which is located on the rider side of the automatic manual (AT). It is important to kickoff ensure that you tin can remove the fill plug. If the fill plug cannot exist removed for some unknown reason or the head becomes stripped – the vehicle is still mobile as y'all oasis't YET drained the fluid. If you drain the fluid showtime and later can't get the fill plug removed – a tow to the dealer is inevitable. No matter what service you perform, always remove the fill up plug first!

Loosen the overflow plug (5mm hex) located on the bottom of the AT fluid pan to ensure its power to be removed when required. If y'all should remove the overflow plug at present, have a pan gear up as fluid will spill.

Identify your drain pan underneath the transmission fluid pan and remove the 14mm drain plug. You may want to gather the "used" ATF then yous tin measure exactly what had been drained – in my case it turned out to be 2.ix liters (three.0 quarts). I had purchased 5 liters from the dealer simply in example as I was unsure of the required volume.

Replace the drain plug (and overflow plug if removed) and proceed to fill the AT with approximately 1/iii quart more than what drained out. It is important to overfill the AT slightly equally you will desire excess fluid to spill when yous remove the overflow plug later in the procedure. Upon pumping the required amount into the AT with the bottle pump (or funnel and hose), supervene upon the make full plug and start the engine. While the truck idles, move the shift lever through ALL of the gear positions to circulate the fluid. Return the gear selector to Park.

With the AT fluid circulated, it is now fourth dimension to set the truck in "Temperature Bank check Way" to verify the right level. To describe the Temp Check Style briefly, there is a light (AT TEMP) located within the the tachometer circle. Later a series of shifts to enter the check fashion, the AT TEMP calorie-free will illuminate when the ATF temperature is within the 46°C (115°F) and 56°C (130°F) range required to accurately check the fluid level. When the ATF temperature surpasses 56°C (130°F), the AT TEMP light will brainstorm to flash indicating the system is also hot for verification.

You may leave the truck idling, or shut off the engine earlier the next pace – your selection.

Jump the #4 and #13 pins on the On Board Diagnostics (OBD) white connector located nearly the drivers kick panel with a curt piece of wire and offset the engine (if not already started). There are 16 pins on the white OBD connector (8 top and 8 lesser). Number 1 is the height left corner, with number 8 on the pinnacle right corner. Number 9 is on the left lower corner, number 16 on the lower right corner. Start at number 1 connector and continue counting the connectors in the same order as you would read a book.

Several of the dash warning lights will begin to wink (normal). Then shifting from "P" to "Northward" (pausing briefly in "N"), began a series (vi shifts) of "N" to "D" to "N" cycles with the shifter. After the 6 shifts are completed the red AT TEMP lite should illuminate for 2 seconds (important to note). Place the AT back into "P" (light volition illuminate again for 2 seconds) and let the truck idle to warm the fluid. It is important to annotation that the light illuminated for two seconds equally that verifies that the truck entered "Temp Bank check Fashion". Without this verification, you may wait all 24-hour interval for a light to illuminate without the truck really being in manner.

When the AT TEMP light illuminates constantly, the fluid is at the correct temperature for checking. If the AT TEMP light should begin to kickoff blinking, this means the fluid temp has surpassed the allowable range and you must shut off the truck and let the system cool. Retry again after a ane/2 hour interruption.

Here is a linked Youtube video I uploaded to analyze the procedure. Sorry for the poor quality, but all I had to use was my P&South Camera with video mode.

After approximately 14 mins of idling (my fluid originally was at room temp of 13*C or 56*F) the AT Temp light finally illuminated, indicating the AT fluid was at the correct temperature for a fluid level bank check (sometimes it will flicker for several seconds, then illuminate steadily). With the truck still idling and in "P", remove the overflow plug to check the fluid level (THE ENGINE MUST Be RUNNING WHEN THE OVERFLOW PLUG IS REMOVED). Think, the Toyota Service Manual describes the fluid being at the correct level when a "small-scale trickle" escapes from the overflow hole. If a steady flow is establish, it must be left to bleed until all that remains is a "small trickle".

If after removing the overflow plug no fluid escapes, you lot must close off the engine and render back to pumping in more than fluid, then proceed again with entering temp check mode.

NOTES:

- Overflow plug torque = 15 ft/lbs
- Fill up plug torque = 29 ft/lbs
- Bleed plug torque = 15 - 20 ft/lbs

- Allow common sense to prevail. Set your Due east brake and cake your wheels before crawling nether your truck. Careful of the frazzle every bit information technology gets quite hot.

- This service is recommended at 60,000 miles* in the U.s.. *Updated by Toyota November 2009

- This service is recommended at 96,000 kms in Canada.

- Do entering the "temp check manner" before attempting this procedure.

- Truck must be level when the procedure is performed.

- I have heard of individuals utilizing an infrared thermometer to measure the temperature of the AT fluid pan instead of the putting the truck in "temp check mode". Differences in temperature exist between the AT fluid and the steel pan. Some posts on other forums (some from dealership techs) indicate a difference can exist of up to 25 degrees. Estrus takes time to transfer from the fluid into the exterior of the pan. When the outside of the pan reaches the advisable temperature, the fluid has likely already surpassed it. Keep this in mind if yous should want to use an IR thermometer.

I could exist incorrect just if you take it to the dealer for the trans service don't they flush the system. Dropping the oil from the pan only removes a small potion of the fluid.

Too, wouldn't it be easier -- if you lot just wanted to replace those few qts to just drop the oil and refill with the exact amount. Equally long as the oil is the same temp it should be fine.

Again a complete arrangement flush is the style to go.

Not all dealers have a flush machine. The bulk of them don't actually from what people tell me and the drain and fill is all they perform for AT maintenance. My dealer doesn't have a flush machine, nor does the other four dealers within a 500 radius. No independent shops practise either. I would advise anyone who drops off their truck for an AT service to clearly understand what service the sealer is going to perform. I have fifty-fifty heard stories of dealers loosely using the term "manual flush" and only do a drain and fill. When y'all question them on their lack of a proper machine, they comment: "that's what we call a flush around here".

There is no problem with measuring what has drained and replacing with the same volume. This would be fine based on the assumption your AT was filled to the correct volume before leaving the factory, or your oil change jockey didn't mistakenly drib the drain-plug out of the AT as many others accept and just replaced an arbitrary volume of fluid not knowing the correct procedure.

The first time I performed this service my AT was under-filled by 0.4 liters (2.5 liters drained and 2.nine liters was replaced as per the procedure). I accept also read posts of people taking their Tacoma'southward to the dealer for the lurch result and the dealer finding the factory fill a piffling low. To each their own, just it isn't difficult at all to exercise information technology the correct fashion - that'south what I am trying to communicate.

Question for those who are 2wd auto we don't have the AT trans temp light on our dash will this even so work? Only the 4wd auto trans has that lite illumination.

The AT TEMP light should illuminate with the dash bulb cheque when you plow your key to the ON position without starting the truck. Its located next to the check engine light in the RPM cluster.

Yea, I've got a 2wd prerunner, and as well judge that toyota doesn't think its necessary on anything except a auto 4wd. I know where its located merely it doesn't lite upwardly when the primal is turned on. I would think it doesn't accept a bulb on the cluster for information technology.

very nice wright up:thumbsup:.rep coming your way.the simply thing is your only replacing a 1/3 to a i/2 of the fluid for for what?nigh of your a/t hold around 12 quarts with the converter.i think this is why american car manufactures have so many tranny issues.u simply drop the pan and refill with 4 or then quarts.leaving eight quarts of dingy crap in there.again very overnice job.not bashing u at all.i think i"ll stick to getting mine flushed at the dealer.

Weird. Could someone else with a Prerunner verify this?

But checked my 4x4 motorcar - AT TEMP definitely illuminates when the key is turned to the ON position.

I would think someone with the 2wd will have to attempt the procedure to know for certain. The procedure is listed as the same in the Toyota Factory Service Manual for both the A750E (2wd) and A750F(4WD) transmissions.
